What you need to know to choose the path that’s right for you.
A career in Education is a noble choice, one that affords you the ability to help shape tomorrow’s leaders, making an impact on the future of the world. If you are an early childhood or elementary education professional, you already know how important your role is in shaping young minds.
Pursuing studies in Education can not only help you gain a more advanced knowledge of today’s pedagogical best practices but also provide you with the opportunity to gain new skills, enhance your instructional capabilities, and prepare you to take on the next generation of learners.
At Alabama State University, our Master of Education features two different curriculums: Early Childhood, which is designed for educators interested in working with children from pre-kindergarten through third grade, and Elementary Education, designed for those wishing to work with students in primary grades. Each program offers the option of a non-certification or certification path and choosing which one is right for you depends on your career goals.
Certification: the path to becoming one of Alabama’s many great teachers
While requirements vary state-by-state, educator certification is a standard that is mandatory throughout the United States, and in most states, a Bachelor’s degree as well as a teacher education program is required. In Alabama, teaching certification earned at the Bachelor level is called “B level” and an Alabama B level teaching certificate is an admission requirement for those applying for the certification option of the online M.Ed. program. Through our Master of Education certification option, you’ll have the opportunity to earn your advanced degree in your desired field and gain Alabama State “A Level” certification as well.
Non-certification: contributing to education through guidance, organization, and leadership
At Alabama State University, we recognize that not all those interested in a career in education wish to have a role in the classroom and for that reason, we also offer a Master of Education without certification.
Our non-certification Master of Education option provides the same robust curriculum choices as our certification path and benefits those seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills or take on an administrative position like Director, Assistant Principal or Principal, as well as those who are interested in a career as a guidance counselor, a media specialist or other non-instructor role in Early Childhood or Elementary Education. Therefore, B level and/or any other teaching certification is not a requirement for admission into this option. Likewise, no certification results from completion of this degree.
